A woman who invited a lonely stranger to lunch has not only been hailed as the ‘nicest person on Facebook’ after recounting her good deed on social media but her post also gets two million Likes.
Brooke Ochoa, 30, from Louise, Texas, who was dining on her own at a local restaurant, noticed an elderly woman asking for a table for one and invited her to join her for lunch instead.
The pair got on so well that they have now arranged to meet every week and the photograph has earned more than 2.2 million likes.
She wrote: ‘Today I went to eat at a restaurant for lunch and I saw this elder lady coming from afar so I waited to hold the door for her, she was very thankful and sweet.
‘She then told the waitress, “table for one”, so I waited and hesitated but then I walked over and said, “I’m eating by myself too would you like to have lunch together?”
‘She was ecstatic! Come to find out she spent the last decade living with her mom who recently passed away and her aunt who recently was put into a nursing home, so she has been having a hard time being alone.
‘We had a wonderful talk, and she just kept smiling and saying thank you for listening to me, which made me smile too! Her words healed my heart just as much as I healed her lonely one. By far the best decision I’ve made all year!!! Her name is Delores, and we will be having lunch every Thursday from now on.’
Brooke’s post touched a chord with her friends and strangers around the world who left heartfelt comments beneath it.
One user wrote, ‘If only there were more people to take the time to do this,’ while another wrote, ‘What a humbling story. We never know when we might be in the same situation so be kind to everyone.’
It has also been picked up by multiple outlets including Canadian site The Loop, which called Brooke ‘the nicest person on Facebook’.
Brooke shared the story on her page but added: ‘This is a beautiful title but not one I was reaching out to get.
‘I’m glad they got my intentions right though because all I wanted was to make a difference in one person’s life.. to be kind, to do better, to see that being there for someone else can fill your heart with just as much happiness too.
‘It was never a boast, just a post that I thought would make others take a step back, make a change and smile. Glad that is exactly what happened.’
